Correct ring sizing is an essential part of professional jewelry production. Whether you are choosing a mounting, selecting a finished ring, or creating a custom piece, accurate sizing ensures comfort, durability, and a proper fit.
International Ring Size Systems
Ring sizes are defined either by the inside circumference or diameter of the band. Several sizing systems are used worldwide:
- EU (European) – Based on inside circumference in millimeters
- US / Canada – Numerical scale using whole and half sizes
- UK / Australia – Alphabetical scale
- Japan – Numerical scale with its own step increments
Antwerp Mounts primarily works with EU sizing, but our workshop is familiar with all major international systems and can convert sizes on request. Understanding the correct conversion is important when working with international clients, resizing orders, or producing custom-made pieces.
How to Measure Ring Sizes Accurately
Accurate measurement is critical for both ready-to-wear and custom jewelry. Below are the recommended professional methods.
Method 1: Using a Professional Ring Sizer (Most Accurate)
A metal or plastic ring mandrel combined with a ring gauge set is the industry standard as it guarantees precision.
To measure, slide the ring gauge onto the finger and choose a size that passes over the knuckle with slight resistance. Then confirm the size on a mandrel.
Method 2: Measuring an Existing Ring
If the customer already has a ring for that finger, place it on a mandrel or measure the inside diameter with calipers and convert it using a size chart. This method is ideal when the client cannot be measured in person.
Things to Consider
When measuring a finger directly, take readings at different times of the day, ensure the hand is warm, and repeat the measurement a few times for accuracy. A properly sized ring should:
- Sit comfortably at the base of the finger
- Pass over the knuckle with slight pressure
- Avoid excessive spinning during wear
For the most reliable, long-term fit, consider the following variables:
Knuckle Size
Knuckle proportions play an important role in determining the correct ring size. Some clients have a knuckle that is noticeably larger than the base of the finger. In these cases, the ring must be sized to pass over the knuckle without causing discomfort, while still fitting securely once in place. Selecting the correct size ensures the ring does not rotate excessively during wear and prevents clients from choosing a size that feels comfortable at the base but becomes difficult to remove.
Band Width
The width of the band has a direct influence on how a ring feels on the finger. Wider bands cover a larger surface area and create more contact with the skin, which results in a tighter fit. For this reason, rings with wide shanks—especially those above 5mm—often require a slightly larger size compared to narrow bands. Adjusting the size according to band width ensures that the finished piece remains comfortable during daily wear.
Lifestyle
A client's lifestyle can affect long-term comfort and wearability. Individuals who engage in physical work, sports, or frequent hand-intensive activities may experience more variation in finger size throughout the day. For such clients, a slightly more forgiving fit may be preferable.
Climate
Temperature and climate also influence finger size. In warmer environments, or during periods of physical activity, fingers tend to swell slightly. In colder conditions, they contract. These natural variations can affect how tight or loose a ring feels throughout the day.
Which Ring Sizes Sell Best
Knowing which ring sizes tend to sell the most can make stocking your collection easier and save you from unnecessary resizes.
Women's Rings
The most common range falls between EU 52–56, with EU 54 being the most requested size.
Men's Rings
Men's rings typically range between EU 58–62, with EU 60 being the most common.
Engagement Rings
Most women choose something around EU 52–54, while men often land in the EU 58–60 range for wedding bands. Since engagement rings are frequently resized anyway, most jewelers keep these sizes on hand as their core selection.
Recommended Stock Sizes
| Category | Core Sizes to Stock | Display Size |
|---|---|---|
| Women's | EU 52, 54, 56 | EU 54 |
| Men's | EU 58, 60, 62 | EU 60 |
For pieces that cannot be resized—like full eternity bands—it's helpful to either carry a broader size range or offer a made-to-order option.
Resizing Considerations
Most 14K and 18K gold rings can be resized, but the feasibility depends on the design.
Easy to Resize
- Solitaire rings
- Three-stone rings
- Plain bands
- Mountings with ample metal in the shank
More Difficult to Resize
- Pavé-set shanks
- Channel settings
- Detailed vintage-inspired mountings
Generally Not Resizable
- Full eternity rings
- Certain tension-set designs
- Very thin bands with limited metal
Professionals should always clarify resizing options before finalizing production or presenting a design to customers.
